Every year, on the same day, Naoki got a letter. No name. No address. Just words that showed a stranger knew his life very well.
The first letter said thank you. It talked about the day he stopped some bad boys from teasing a girl in school. He was fourteen then, in his high school, in his old city.
The second letter said sorry. It said, “I never talk to you, even once, in all these years. I am soooo sorry.”
The third letter had only one line: “I wish we could be together.”
Naoki read all the letters so many times, sitting alone on his bed at night. His heart felt full and confused, all at the same time. Who is this girl? Why does she watch him from afar every year, but never come close?
For eight years, the letter kept coming. Every year, on the same date, one letter came in his mailbox. Nobody rang the bell. Nobody left a name. Just paper, folded soft, waiting for him, like a small piece of somebody’s heart.
Naoki’s father’s job made the family move many times. First they lived in a big city. That is where Naoki met a girl named Mio, in his school, when he was fourteen. She was a quiet girl, always sitting alone at back of class. Some bad boys in school always tease her. They called her ugly. They called her poor girl, because her clothes were old and simple.
One day, Naoki saw those boys teasing her near the school gate, laughing at her, calling ugly names. Naoki felt angry. He walked to them and said, “Stop this. Leave her alone.” The boys walked away.
Naoki did not think much of it after that. He just walked home like a normal day.
But for Mio, that day changed everything. Nobody, in her whole life, ever stood up for her like that. That night, she cried, but happy tears, not sad tears. From that day, her heart only think about Naoki. She never told him. She was too shy, too scared. She always think, “I am poor. I am not pretty. He will never like me back.” So she keep her feeling only in her heart, silent, like a small secret she carry alone.
She began watching him from far — not in a bad way, just small, quiet way. When he play cricket, she watch from school window. When he help old teacher carry books, she see this too and love him more. Her friend Ritu knew Naoki’s family little bit, and sometimes Ritu tell Mio small news about him. Mio keep every small news like treasure in her heart.
Then, one year later, Naoki’s father got new job in different city. Naoki’s family moved away. Mio’s heart broke that day, but she never said one word to him. She just watched his house go empty from far, and cried alone in her room.
After school finished, Mio did not have money for further studies. Her family was poor. She moved to a small town near the sea to live with her old grandmother, and help in her family’s small bookshop.
But her heart never forget Naoki. Every year, on the same date — the date he saved her from those boys — she wrote him one letter. She still get small news about him from Ritu sometimes. She post the letters to his old address, and his family always send them forward to wherever they now live. She never sign her name. She was too scared he will know it is “the ugly, poor girl” from his old school.
Then, after one year, something like magic happen. Naoki’s father job got transfer again — this time, to the same small town where Mio now live.
Naoki was seventeen now, in his last year of school. He did not want to move again, leaving his friends behind felt hard. But he had no choice.
The new town was quiet. Small shops. Slow roads. Smell of salt in the air, and rain that come without warning.
One day, rain start falling hard, fast drops like small stones. Naoki run into small shop to stay dry. It was old bookstore, full of old books smelling like dust and time.
A girl stood behind counter, folding pages of a book. She look up at him, and something in her eyes look soft, little sad, and happy, all together.
“You can stay here,” she said, “until rain stop.”
“Thank you,” Naoki said, still breathing fast from running. He look around at shelves. “This place feel… warm.”
“It is my family shop,” she said quiet. “My name is Mio.”
“I’m Naoki.”
When he said his name, her hand stop moving on the book. Just for one second. He did not notice then. He will understand later.
He came back next day. And next day too. Slowly, without trying, they become close friends. Mio was quiet, but her quiet feel kind, not cold. She always seem to know what book Naoki want, even before he ask. One day, she give him book by his favorite writer. He never tell her his favorite writer name.
“How you know this?” he ask, surprised.
“I guess,” she say soft, looking down.
But it happen again. And again. One time, Naoki start a sentence, Mio finish it — same exact words in his head. He stop walking and stare at her.
“Mio, how you know that? Those my exact words.”
“Maybe,” she say small, “I know you better than you think.”
Weeks passed. Naoki and Mio grow closer — best friends, then slowly, something more than friends. They study together after school. They walk home under one umbrella when it rain. Sometimes their hand touch by accident, and both go quiet, cheek warm, heart beating fast, too shy to say anything.
One evening, Naoki finally say, “Mio, I think I like you. Not just friend. My heart feel different when I with you.”
Mio’s eyes fill with tears, but she smile too. “I like you also, Naoki. For very long time. Longer than you know.”
But Naoki still have questions. One Sunday, Mio go to market to buy vegetables. Naoki stay in shop, waiting. While he wait, he see loose wooden board on floor, near old counter. He curious, so he lift it up.
Under board was big box, old, covered in soft dust. Naoki open it slow. Inside was many letters, all with his name on front, in same soft handwriting he know so well now.
His heart stop for one second. He understand now. He sat on floor, holding one letter in his hand, when the shop bell ring. Mio walk in with her bags, and she see him there, on floor, box open in front of him.
Her face turn white. She drop the bags.
Naoki stand up slowly, letter still in his hand. He walk close to her, his eyes wet.
“Mio,” he said, voice shaking, “I know now. You are the one. You are the one who send me letter, every year, for eight year.”
Mio could not speak. She only cry, small tears falling down her face.
“Why?” Naoki ask, soft. “Why you hide from me so long? Why you never just tell me?”
Mio sat down on the floor, near the box, and finally, after so many years, she let the truth come out.
“Naoki, you remember that day, in old school, when those boys tease me? They call me ugly. They call me poor girl. Every day, in school, I feel small, like nobody. Then you, you stop them. Nobody ever do that for me before. That day, my heart choose you. Only you.”
She wipe her eyes, but more tears come.
“But I never tell you, because… when i looked at you I feel poor and ugly. You have good family, good clothes, good life. And me — I am poor girl, simple face, simple clothes. I think, if I tell you my feeling, you will laugh at me. I was scared. So I only watch you, from far, quiet, like a shadow. When Ritu tell me small news about you, I keep it like treasure. Every year, I write letter, because it was only way my heart know how to say ‘I love you’ without you seeing my poor face, my simple life.”
Naoki’s eyes fill with tears now too. He kneel down next to her, and hold her hand tight.
“Mio, you think I care about rich or poor? Pretty face or simple face? You are the kindest person I ever meet. You remember every small thing about me. You wait for me, for eight year, without asking anything back. That is not small love. That is biggest love I ever see in my life.”
Mio cry harder now, but this time, it was happy cry. Naoki pull her close, and hold her tight, her head on his shoulder.
“I am sorry I hide so long,” she whisper.
“Don’t be sorry,” Naoki whisper back. “You are here now. That is all matter.”
That evening, rain start falling outside the shop window, soft and steady. Mio look up, and for first time, she let Naoki see her real smile — the big, happy smile she always keep hidden when rain fall, because she was scared to show her true heart.
Naoki wipe her tears with his hand. “You are not poor to me, Mio. You are not ugly to me. You are the girl who love me quietly for eight year, and that make you the richest heart I ever know.”
Mio laugh through her tears, and lean her head on his shoulder again. Outside, the rain kept falling, soft and gentle, like the sky was crying happy tears too.
They sat together like that for long time, not saying much, just holding hand, watching the rain fall on the small, quiet street. No big words needed anymore. Just two hearts, finally together, after eight long years of waiting.
